hi, im new [25 Oct 2005|12:22pm]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Hi, I'm Islemay.
I play the banjo.
I swing dance and lindy hop and all that fun stuff. The swing society at my school is very active and we are begining to communicate with other groups in the midwest. Unfortunitly when ever I go home (Indiana) I am swingless:(. So if anyone knows of a good swing seen in south/central IN please let me know.
A favorite quote? hmmmm, there are much to many to choise from.
My favorite music varies. I have very eclectic taste so, it can be anything from bluegrass to tecno, although I tend to turn away from pop rock and pop country.

I've got that swing [19 Feb 2005|10:44pm]

[ mood | curious ]

I'm from Brisbane (Australia) and got into swing music through Brian Setzer Orchestra and then moved onto Cherry Poppin Daddies, BBVD, Royal Crown Revue and Squirrel Nut Zippers.

Now I'm just checking out everything I can find.

At the moment I'm downloading some Glenn Miller and some Atomic Fireballs which both seem pretty awesome.

I've only just started learning swing dancing a few weeks ago and hope to end up getting pretty damned good.

Any questions?

(Hi! I'm Owen.)

Radio shows [01 Feb 2005|11:03am]

[ mood | radio rules! ]

Over here I find that a good radio show is hard to find, specifically one that plays swing, jazz, rockabilly et al. However, during my endless twiddling of those dials during a blissful winter's eve, I have come up with some fairly good shows, that you probably would all be able to listen to on the 'listen again' facility.

The Mighty Piano [02 Jan 2005|03:44am]

[ mood | happy ]

Heya :) I haven't posted here in a long time but me and friends started this community out. I recently bought some Jelly Roll Morton CD's, I must say I have become quite fond of the older piano styles. The Red Hot Peppers where conducted by Jelly Roll and they play some fantastic numbers. Likewise I have been listening to some Count Basie, you can never beat the tenor sax wars with the piano accompaniment. I find that Basie did a great job with directing his orchestra and playing a swinging rythm on the piano. To continue my list of piano playes I must say I enjoy listening to Fats Waller, besides his great humor his songs seem to carry a happy feel above and behond the normal. I read somewhere that Fats usually never played what he wanted, mostly because he had a contract with blue bird records and he had to play what they wanted him to play. I admire him because he played these songs as if he loved them. I play the tenor sax and I can't say I put my all into songs I don't like, but there in lies my weakness :)

Check out www.riverwalk.org when ever you can. They play live broadcasts ever week with fantastic traditional jazz.

[19 Dec 2004|10:23pm]

Hello! My name is Kendra...and I've been recently getting really into Swing Dancing...
I started learning around....October? yes...

And I have had previous basic experience when I was in 9th grade (i'm in 12th grade now)

can't say i'm anything great, but swing dancing is the one style of dance that really fits my personality and interest!! I've always been into jazz music and big-band sound to even ska. I used to play trombone in jazz bands, as well as clarinet if needed. Anyways, i've learned a lot of east coast---haven't done any west coast, but it doesn't look as good to me. :-P

here's a bad pic of me looking more like a hooker than a flapper....Collapse )

And i also <3 the movie SWING KIDS with christian bale. <--random.

[30 Nov 2004|11:11pm]

Hey guys, i just thought i'd pop in cause i need some advice.

I've been swing dancing for the last 4+ years and am not as fanatic about it as i used to be, but i still like it. Anyway, I'm getting married in June and my fiance has a agree to learn some big-band swing so we can dance a song at our wedding. So now i'm looking for that "perfect song." But I'm not sure what exactly to look for.

I need something semi-fast. I'm just going to teach him east coast at first. (I'll teach him some lindy later). And I'm kind of looking for something that doesnt have a whole lot of lyrics, or is if does that the be some neutral love lyrics or something. Do you have any ideas of specific artists i should look up?

Tonight i was listening to a Glenn Miller CD and I'm thinking "In the mood" might be a good song...but maybe something a little faster would be good? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Does anyone still check this? [14 Nov 2004|11:20pm]

So does anyone still look at this community?

Well, I went to a swing dance yesterday night and took some pics. Sucks cause i left my camera at my date's dorm so there were no pics of the actual dance. But yea, here some pics of b4 and after the dance. Bought the whole outfit the night of, and finding red suspenders is alot harder than you think.

Well now I have red suspenders and a durby hat for ska showsCollapse )
